협동조합의 사회경제적 역할에 대한 긍정적 평가에 힘입어 2012년을 UN이 정한 ‘세계협동조합의 해’(IYC)로 맞게 된 것은 참으로 반갑고 뜻 깊은 일이다. 글로벌 금융위기를 경험하면서 빈곤해소, 일자리 창출, 사회통합 실현 등 지속가능한 경제를 위한 협동조합의 역할과 가능성에 대해 국제사회가 다시금 주목하게 된 결과라 할 것이다.
